Updates

Kitly updates itself on Windows, and only on Windows. This page covers how that works and what to do on the other platforms.

Windows only

Automatic updates work for the Windows one-click installer build only. The Windows MSI (the per-machine IT rollout) does not auto-update, and macOS and Linux builds report updating as unsupported. On those, update by downloading the new build from kitly.fun and installing it over the old one; your projects are separate folders and are untouched.

The ground rule

Settings states it up front: "Nothing is ever downloaded or installed without your say-so." Kitly checks for updates on a schedule, but downloading and installing are both explicit choices you make.

Checking

  • Automatic: the auto-check checkbox under Settings > Software Update is on by default, with a frequency of hourly, every 6 hours (the default), every 12 hours, or daily.
  • Manual: Check Now in the same section, or Check for Updates... from the Help menu or the burger menu.

Updates download from uai-cdn.com, and downloads are differential: you fetch what changed, not the whole installer.

The update dialog

When an update exists, the dialog shows the release notes with three choices:

  • Download Update starts the download.
  • Later dismisses it; you'll be reminded again.
  • Skip This Version silences this particular version. Undo that later with the Clear button next to the skipped version in Settings.

While downloading, the dialog notes "You can close this window" because the download continues in the background. Once downloaded, it reassures again that nothing installs until you choose to restart, and offers Install Later or Restart & Install.

Jobs and restarts

Restart & Install warns you if jobs are still running. Let a long render or batch finish, or accept that restarting ends it.

The status bar chips

You don't need the dialog open to follow along. The right side of the status bar mirrors the state: an "Update available" chip, a download percentage while fetching, and "Restart to update" once it's ready. Click through to act.

When checks fail quietly

Background update checks that hit a network error stay silent on purpose; you won't get error popups because a CDN was briefly unreachable. If you suspect checks aren't happening, run Check Now and watch the result directly.
